“Like Björk on a good day.” is how online music blog Beatradar described Show Pony, the alter ego of American Laura Nygren. The double bassist, singer, electronic musician, and producer, Laura Nygren is fast establishing herself as one of the most versatile and exciting rising stars active in the Netherlands pop and classical scenes. First completing her Bachelor of Music from the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht in 2015 in classical double bass, Nygren then went on to receive her Master of Music in Live Electronics from the Conservatory of Amsterdam in 2017.
Show Pony came into existence after years of singing quietly at home with her double bass, writing songs about heartbreak, atoms, and the absurd. Her debut EP was released in May 2021 during Rewire Festival. As a double bassist, she has performed alongside Damon Albarn, s t a r g a z e, Soap & Skin and Sinfonia Rotterdam, and as Show Pony combines her innovative playing with vocals and synthesizer to explore a vividly personal artistic universe.
During the Dutch Double Bass Festival performs a special duo version of Show Pony with harpist Beate Loonstra. Performing together as a harp bass duo since 2014 the two create a lush atmosphere of double bass, harp, beats and vocals.
