You’ve probably never seen so many double basses together in one place! For the iconic project Music for Basses, rising star composer A. Crespo Barba has written a piece, commissioned for the festival, for more than 40 double bass players. In collaboration with various Dutch and European conservatories, the new piece will be rehearsed and performed by the students during Dutch Double Bass Festival 2023. Written with the composer’s vision of the double bass as the ultimate “instrument of delicacy”. Crespo Barba is particularly drawn to the similarities of the double bass with the human voice, especially the imperfections: “It’s there in the imperfections, where the truth lies.” The composer was honored in 2020 with the “werkbijdrage muziekauteur” from the Performing Arts Fund NL and previously wrote a piece for bassist James Oesi commissioned by the Gaudeamus Muziekweek, Grachtenfestival and November Music festivals.
This very special project is made possible by generous contributions from the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds and VandenEnde Foundation.
