Talking Bass: The Gary Karr Legacy

Sat 8 Nov 16:30

Widely regarded as the founding father of the modern double bass solo tradition, Gary Karr revolutionised what the instrument could be — and who it could reach. From his landmark TV debut with Bernstein and the NY Philharmonic, to his pioneering recordings and residencies, Karr didn’t just expand the technique of the bass – he changed the culture around it.

This session reflects on his legacy: the rise of the bass as a solo voice, the importance of generosity and mentorship in our field, and how one artist’s vision still shapes the instrument’s identity today. We look at the doors Karr opened – artistically, pedagogically, globally and in particular his connection to the Netherlands

A celebration, a reflection, hosted by one of Gary Karr’s former students, Quirijn van Regteren Altena.
